FAQ – LASER WARTS & VERRUCAE

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS – LASER WARTS & VERRUCAE

WARTS/ VERRUCAE

Are small growths on the skin? They are caused by a virus called the human papilloma virus. The virus causes a proliferation of small blood vessels to feed the wart or verruca. Warts can occur anywhere on the body but occur most commonly on hands and feet. Warts are bundles of skin cells which have begun to grow abnormally due to contraction of a virus infection; they’re commonly found on vulnerable areas of skin that are likely to be banged or damaged, such as fingers, elbows, knees and the face.

Verrucas or plantar warts are found on the bottom of the feet Verrucas are warts that occur on the soles of the feet. They are the same as warts on any other part of the body. However, they may look flatter, Due to pressure on the sole of the foot, a layer of hard skin forms over the wart and can become inflamed and sore. They can be spread in showers, around swimming pools and by sharing towels or shoes.

How does Laser technology work?

The Nd:Yag laser works by selectively destroying blood vessels without damaging the surrounding tissues. The energy from the laser heats up the blood vessels feeding the wart, which collapse in on themselves as a result and stop the blood supply to the wart. This starves the wart of nutrients so it naturally falls off after a few weeks.

How many treatments will I need?

In some cases, the lesion will gradually disappear altogether over a period of weeks. However, larger warts and most verrucas can be very deeply rooted and may require a number of sessions to remove

What to expect?

Although you may feel some mild discomfort, the laser does not generally cause any pain. Sometimes, patients with sensitive skin benefit from the use of anaesthetic cream to numb the area during treatment. The treated area may be tender for around 7 days after treatment,

You might notice some darkening of the skin where the wart used to be, but this is temporary.
